Profitability is the top priority for a successful business. What sounds like a banality is not so straightforward in practice: The larger the company and the more complex its product portfolio, the more factors need to be considered when searching for the most efficient solution. If you want to strike the right balance between cost, quality, time, and effort for major investments like developing a new product or constructing a new plant, then Cost Engineering is the right department to turn to. The technology group ZF Friedrichshafen AG, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, wanted to provide its employees with an in-house information booklet on what the work of this department looks like in practical terms.

DIE WORTWERKSTATT: Deep Dive and Complete Overview

Cost engineering – never heard of it? That was also our first reaction when DIE WORTWERKSTATT’s long-standing customer ZF approached us with the assignment. Even more reason to dig deep into the subject: We pored over an avalanche of PowerPoint slides and talked to experts in the company to grasp what a cost engineer actually does.

On this basis, we developed a concept for an in-house guide that explains the cost engineering processes and the background. We wrote articles, created a glossary of the most common technical terms, scribbled infographics and, in collaboration with our art director, developed a clean and appealing look for what at first glance appears to be a rather dry subject. After all, the brochure was not only intended to make it easier for new cost engineers to get started in the ZF organization, but also to give employees in other departments an overview of the responsibilities and working methods of Cost Engineering. It goes without saying that we were also responsible for the final production and printing of the booklet.
